Ingredient Notes

  • Mini Peanut Butter Cups – These make up the “broom” base. Any brand of bite-sized peanut butter cups will work well — just be sure they’re firm enough to hold the pretzel stick once assembled.
  • Pretzel Sticks – I used gluten-free pretzel sticks since I have celiac disease. They tend to be a little thicker than regular ones, but still fit nicely into the peanut butter cups. If using standard pretzels, be gentle when pressing them in to avoid cracking the chocolate.
  • Orange Candy Melts – These act as edible glue and give the brooms their festive Halloween look. You can use white candy melts tinted orange, or go for chocolate melts for a darker version. Purple or green candy melts would also be a cute!

I tested a few ways to assemble these and found that pressing the pretzel stick directly into the peanut butter cup often caused the chocolate to crack and the broom to loosen. Using a small dab of melted candy instead works much better — it holds everything together and adds a fun pop of Halloween color!

Step-by-step instructions

These pretzel witches’ brooms are very easy to make with a few simple ingredients. The steps below with matching photos are meant to help you see the recipe at various stages so that you can make these chocolate covered pretzels perfectly every time.

Mini peanut butter cups arranged upside down on a white plate, ready to assemble Halloween witch broom treats.
Place all your mini peanut butter cups upside down on a tray or plate — this will be the base of your broom. Keeping them flat makes assembly faster and helps prevent tipping once the pretzel is added.

Add your orange candy melts to a small microwave-safe bowl.
Melted orange candy coating stirred smooth in a white bowl with a spoon.
Microwave in 20–30 second bursts, stirring between each until smooth. It should take about 60-90 seconds. Do not microwave all at one time or the candy melts can seize and turn really gritty.
Hand dipping a pretzel stick into melted orange candy coating.
Dip one end of each pretzel stick into the melted candy, coating about 1/4 inch. This creates the “glue” that will secure it to the peanut butter cup — plus it gives that festive Halloween pop of color.

Press each dipped pretzel gently into the center of a peanut butter cup. Don’t force it — just a light twist as you insert helps the candy set without cracking the chocolate.

Let the pretzel brooms set until the candy melts are dry to the touch. To speed up the process you can put them in the refrigerator for about 5-10 minutes. The candy melts set very quickly.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t overheat the candy melts. Melt them in short bursts and stir between each. Overheating can make them thick and grainy instead of smooth and easy to dip.
  • Serving idea: Arrange the finished broomsticks on a white platter or parchment-lined board with candy corn or mini pumpkins for a festive Halloween presentation.

FAQs

Do I have to use orange candy melts?

Nope! Orange just adds that Halloween pop. You can use white or chocolate candy melts — or even tint white ones with gel food coloring to match your party theme.

Why did my peanut butter cups crack when I added the pretzels?

That happens if the pretzel is pushed in too forcefully or if the chocolate is soft. Using melted candy as “glue” instead of pressing the stick directly in prevents cracking and keeps the broomsticks upright.

Can I make these gluten-free?

Absolutely. I make mine with gluten-free pretzel sticks since I have celiac disease. They’re usually a little thicker than regular ones (as seen in the photos in my post), but they hold up perfectly and taste great.

Storage Instructions

Room Temperature: If your kitchen is cool and dry, these treats will keep well at room temperature for up to 2 days. Store them in a single layer in an airtight container to prevent the pretzels from getting soft and stale.

Avoid refrigerating unless absolutely necessary (like if your house is very warm or humid). If you do refrigerate them, they’ll still taste good, but the pretzels won’t be quite as crunchy. These pretzels are just so quick and easy to make that I typically make them the morning of my event or party.

Course: Dessert

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 12 minutes
Servings: 24 servings
Calories: 43kcal

Ingredients

  • 24 mini peanut butter cups, unwrapped
  • 24 pretzel sticks, about 3 inches long
  • ¼ cup orange candy melts, or chocolate, if preferred

Instructions

  • In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the orange candy melts in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  • Place 24 mini peanut butter cups upside down on a parchment-lined tray or plate — this creates the “broom bristles.”
  • Dip one end of a pretzel stick into the melted candy, then gently press it into the center of an upside-down peanut butter cup. The candy coating acts as glue.
  • Repeat with remaining pieces. Once all brooms are assembled, let stand at room temperature or chill the tray in the fridge for about 10 minutes or until the candy coating has set. It sets pretty quickly.
  • Arrange the peanut butter cup pretzel witches’ brooms on a platter for a fun, festive Halloween treat!

Notes

  • Pretzel Sticks Note: I used gluten-free pretzels for this since I have celiac disease, so if you use regular pretzel sticks yours may be skinnier and a little longer than mine!
  • Candy Melts Note: For variety, use different candy melt colors like green or purple.
