Ingredient Notes
- Cocoa puff cereal – You can use your favorite round cereal like Cocoa Puffs or its generic equivalent. I also think Kix or Corn Pops would also work well. Basically you want to use any type of round puffy cereal in this recipe.
- Peanut butter – It’s best to use the thick peanut butter (not the runny natural kind) for this recipe to get the right consistency.
- Cocoa powder – I just used regular cocoa powder, but you could also use dark cocoa powder to get darker reindeer poop treats which make it look even more realistic.
Step-by-step instructions
- Add the peanut butter, chocolate chips, and butter to a heat-proof bowl.
- Microwave in 30-second increments until the chocolate is melted. Stir until smooth.
- Pour the chocolate over the cocoa puff cereal. Stir until the cereal is completely coated.
- Whisk together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar.
- Pour the powdered sugar mixture over the cereal and stir until the cereal is covered. Alternatively, you can place everything in a large Ziploc bag and shake it until the powdered sugar covers the cereal.
- Dump the reindeer poop out onto a baking sheet and allow to cool briefly. Serve in a bowl or portion out into cellophane bags as a gift!
Expert tips
- It’s much easier to use a large storage container with a lid or a large gallon-sized Ziploc bag to shake the cereal with the powdered sugar mixture. It covers the cereal more effectively than using a bowl with a spoon.
- Make sure you are only microwaving the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter for 30 seconds at a time. Stirring in between is essential. Otherwise, you may burn the chocolate which will make the whole recipe taste horrible.
- Use a dark cocoa powder if you want a really strong cocoa flavor. It was also make the reindeer poop darker in color, which makes it look more like… well… reindeer poop!
