PRO TIP

Press the pretzel arms in at a slight angle so they look like your snowman is waving hello!

Ingredient Notes

  • Nutter Butter cookies: The peanut shape works perfectly for a snowman body. The pinched middle almost looks like the separation between two stacked snowballs!
  • White candy melts: I use Wilton brand, but any white candy melts will work. The white coating becomes your snowman’s snowy body.
  • Pretzel twists: Break these into small pieces for the arms. You want little stick shapes, so look for the straight parts of the pretzel.
  • Candy eyeballs: Look for small candy eyeballs in the baking aisle. Wilton makes great ones in various sizes.
  • Orange sprinkle or candy: A tiny orange sprinkle or the tip of an orange candy makes the perfect carrot nose. I used orange confetti sprinkles.
  • Pearl sprinkles for buttons: I used red and gold dragee pearls for the buttons, but any small round sprinkle works. Get creative with colors!
  • Sanding sugar: This gives the snowman that sparkly, freshly-fallen-snow look. Sprinkle it on while the chocolate is still wet.

White candy melts in a glass bowl ready to be melted for Nutter Butter Snowman cookies.
Melt your white candy melts. Use 50% power in the microwave and stir between each 30-second interval. If you go too hot too fast, the chocolate can seize up or get clumpy. You want it smooth and pourable, not thick.

Dip and decorate the face first. After coating the cookie, add the eyes, nose, and arms while the chocolate is wet. Save the buttons for last so you can space them evenly once the face is in place.

Add the finishing touches. Sprinkle sanding sugar over the wet chocolate for that snowy sparkle, then press in your pearl sprinkles for buttons. Don’t worry if each snowman looks a little different. That’s part of the charm!

Recipe FAQs

What can I use for the carrot nose?

I used small orange confetti sprinkles, but you could also use the tip of an orange candy, an orange jimmie sprinkle, or even a tiny piece of an orange Starburst cut into a triangle.

Can I make these without the sticks?

Absolutely! Skip the stick step and lay the decorated cookies flat on parchment paper. They’re just as cute without the sticks.

Do I have to use sanding sugar?

Nope! The sanding sugar gives that sparkly, snowy look, but your snowmen will still be adorable without it. You could also try white nonpareils or white sprinkles for a similar effect.

Expert Tips

  • Work over a bowl or parchment paper when adding sanding sugar so you can collect and reuse the excess.
  • If your kitchen is warm, pop the dipped cookies in the fridge for 2 minutes to help the chocolate set before adding decorations.
  • Use a toothpick to place small decorations like the nose or buttons. It gives you more control than your fingers.
  • Make sure your bowl is completely dry. Even a small amount of water can cause candy melts to seize. Dry your bowl thoroughly before adding candy melts.

Storage instructions

Store: These snowmen will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Freeze: Want to make them ahead? Freeze in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers for up to 3 months. Some sprinkle colors may bleed slightly when thawing.

Do not refrigerate: The fridge creates humidity that can make the white chocolate coating sticky or spotted.

Equipment

  • 12 candy sticks or lollipop sticks

Ingredients

  • 12 Nutter Butter cookies
  • 1 cup 6oz, 175g white candy melts
  • 24 candy eyeballs
  • 12 small orange sprinkles or candies, for carrot nose
  • 36 pearl sprinkles, for buttons
  • 12 pretzel twists, broken into pieces for arms
  • White sanding sugar

Instructions

  • Break pretzel twists into small stick-shaped pieces for arms. Set aside.
  • Gently twist each Nutter Butter cookie to separate the halves. Dip one end of a candy stick (about 1-1.5 inches) into melted white chocolate and press it into the peanut butter filling. Place the other half on top and press together. Let stand 10 minutes to set.
  • Melt white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power for 1 minute. Stir, then continue heating in 30-second intervals until smooth.
  • Using the stick as a handle, dip the entire cookie into the white chocolate, coating all sides. Tap off any excess and place on parchment paper.
  • While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle sanding sugar over the cookie for a snowy sparkle.
  • Add two candy eyeballs near the top of the cookie. Place a small orange sprinkle just below for the carrot nose.
  • Press two pretzel pieces into the sides for arms.
  • Add three pearl sprinkles down the lower half of the cookie for buttons. Let stand 10 minutes to fully set.

Notes

  • Add the eyes, nose, and arms first, then the buttons last. It’s easier to space the buttons evenly once the face is done.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
